Frequently asked questions

Everything travellers usually ask before a trip to Turkmenistan. Can't find your answer? We're a message away.

When is the best time to visit Turkmenistan?

Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-November) are best, with moderate temperatures for touring the desert and cities. Summer is extremely hot in the lowlands and best avoided, while winters are short but can be cold.

Do I need a visa to visit Turkmenistan?

Yes; almost all travelers need a visa, and Turkmenistan is one of the world's most restrictive countries for entry. A letter of invitation (LOI) certified by the State Migration Service, usually arranged through a licensed Turkmen tour operator, is required before you can obtain a tourist visa at an embassy or on arrival at Ashgabat airport. A new e-visa system has been legislated but is not yet operational, so confirm current rules well in advance.

How many days do I need in Turkmenistan?

A focused trip of five to seven days can cover Ashgabat, Nisa, the Darvaza crater and one or two Silk Road sites. Longer tours add Merv, Konye-Urgench and the Caspian coast.

Is Turkmenistan safe for travelers?

Turkmenistan has very low levels of street crime and is generally safe for the guided travel that most visitors undertake. However, tourism infrastructure is limited, some zones are restricted, and independent movement is tightly controlled, so following your licensed guide is essential.

What should I pack and wear?

Bring lightweight clothing and strong sun protection for the desert, plus warmer layers for cool evenings and winter travel. Modest, conservative dress is advised, and comfortable footwear is useful for exploring ruins and dunes.

What is the signature Turkmenistan experience?

Camping beside the fiery Darvaza Gas Crater and watching it glow against the night sky is the country's unmissable highlight. Exploring the marble monuments of Ashgabat and the Silk Road ruins of Merv rounds out the experience.

What food should I try in Turkmenistan?

Try plov (rice pilaf with meat and carrots), grilled shashlik kebabs, and hearty flatbreads. Green tea accompanies most meals in traditional Turkmen fashion.

Is Turkmenistan good for group tours?

Yes; because independent travel is so restricted, small guided group tours arranged through licensed operators are the standard and most practical way to visit. Groups benefit from shared logistics for the required invitation, guiding and long overland transfers.
