Classic Vietnam North-to-South
The full-country spine, imperial cities, a limestone bay cruise, a lantern-lit old town and the floating markets of the Mekong, travelled from the capital to the delta.

Vietnam stretches more than 1,600 kilometers down the eastern edge of Southeast Asia, unfurling emerald rice terraces, limestone karst bays and buzzing, motorbike-filled cities. From the misty mountains of the north to the sultry Mekong Delta in the south, few countries pack in such variety of landscapes, cuisine and living history. Ancient imperial capitals and lantern-lit old towns sit alongside French colonial boulevards and world-class beaches. It is a country made for slow, sensory travel, where every region tastes and feels distinct.

Because Vietnam is so long, no single season suits the whole country at once. In the north, Hanoi and Halong Bay are most pleasant in spring (March-April) and autumn (October-November), avoiding the hot, wet summer and chilly winter. The central coast around Hue, Hoi An and Danang is driest and sunniest from February to June. The tropical south and Mekong Delta are best in the dry season from December to March, while northwestern trekking around Sapa is finest from October to March. Typhoons can affect the central coast between August and November.
